Riding in Cars with Babies

Summer is the season for families to go to the beach or visit theme parks to have quality bonding time. Aside from that, it is also the perfect time to introduce babies to the outside world. Hence, it is imperative to observe appropriate precautions to ensure the children’s safety while travelling in cars at all times.

A child, regardless of age and size, should always be fastened safely into a car seat. If you are going to place the baby in the front passenger seat, have the car seat face backwards, as this provides the most protection to the child. However, if the passenger seat has an air bag, it is not advisable to have the child sit in front. Furthermore, if the car seat is too big for the baby, have booster cushions on either side to keep her snug. This prevents her from hitting her head on the sides of the seat as well. Alternatively, it would be best to buy a carrier, car seat or capsule that fits the baby perfectly. Use a seatbelt to secure the child, but make sure that it is not blocking her face or neck. If the child gets restless because of the seatbelt, give her toys that can distract her attention. Aside from that, you can also let older kids play with the baby while you are travelling. Similarly, you can play music or films for kids if you have a DVD player in your car to keep the child busy and not to mind the seatbelt. Most of all, never drive away unless you are sure that everyone, especially the baby, is snugly fastened in their seats.
